How does Pilates work?

The Method Pilates works the deeper muscles to achieve efficient and graceful movement, improve alignment and breathing, and increase body awareness. It delivers simultaneous stretching and strengthening in a non-impact balanced system of body/mind exercise. With regular practice you will balance your body, build strong lean muscles, and improve your posture, concentration, flexibility, efficiency of movement, and mobility.

What are the principles of Pilates?

Breath Each part of every exercise has a specific breath attached to it that helps facilitate the movement, so don’t forget to inhale and exhale as directed.

Precision By concentrating on the specific details of each movement, you’ll be able to coordinate body with breath and improve the payoff.

Control Pilates takes the body through its full range of motion in all possible directions, but never beyond, so focus on taking your body only as far as it is able while still maintaining command of the movement.

Who is Pilates For?

Pilates can be done by people of all ages, from very young to very old. It is universally attractive to many classes of people and situations, such as:

Athletes and Fitness Enthusiasts: The Pilates Method can help athletes with tight muscles, injuries, and injury prevention or simply when muscles need to be strengthened in a new way.

People needing rehabilitation: The Pilates Method is different from most therapies because it strengthens the entire body, not just the injured or imbalanced area. Those with scoliosis, tight neck, low back pain, knock knees, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and other problems may greatly benefit from Pilates.

People with Chronic Fatigue: The Method will improve energy and posture, so expect to feel taller, lighter and revitalized after each Pilates session.

People with Poor Posture: The Method will improve posture and associated problems. It will correct your alignment and will make you look taller, slimmer and more confident

People with aging bodies: Pilates, without stressing joints, enhances flexibility, circulation and muscle mass, which in turn fights osteoporosis.

Pregnant Woman and Woman with Post-Partum: The Method helps woman bounce back quickly to their pre-pregnant shape and form.

Who invented Pilates?

Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) invented a form of exercise that he called Contrology. Today, it is called The Method Pilates, which offers the original exercises on specific equipment that he designed: the Universal Reformer, the Wunda Chair, and the Cadillac. Today, these exercises have been combined with correct biomechanics into a system that teaches the FORM necessary to safely gain strength and flexibility. The Method Pilates system is unique because of its use of exercise Fundamentals to explain the body mind connection of this work.
